It is always important to be equipped with the right information when you are shopping for a heating and/or cooling unit.  You need to know if you want to cool or heat and cool the space, how many  spaces you need to heat/cool, the size of the spaces, and where you would like the indoor units located.

The first question is if you just want to cool a space or heat and cool the space.  Ductless mini splits feature a few different options.  You may choose a cooling only system or you may choose a heating and cooling system.  The heating and cooling systems contain heat pumps and some may feature a supplemental electric heater for added comfort during cold winter days.

Next is to decide how many spaces you would like to heat/cool.  Zoning is the terminology used to identify the number of rooms you need to heat/cool.  The ductless mini split packages can be identified as single zone, dual zone, tri-zone, quad zone, etc.  You will need to choose the number of zones that best meets your needs.  These zones can usually be operated separately for your convenience.

It is very important to determine the size of the space you need to heat/cool.  Below is a chart to help you determine the amount of BTU’s you should be shop for:

9,000 BTU:     300-500 square feet
12,000 BTU :    450-500 square feet
18,000 BTU:    700-750 square feet
24,000 BTU:    950-1000 square feet
30,000 BTU:    1200-1250 square feet
36,000 BTU:    1450-1500 square feet

The last piece of information you need to gather before shopping for a ductless mini split is where you you would like your indoor unit to be installed.  Inspect the room where you need heating/cooling.  Decide if you would like the indoor system to be high on a wall, on a ceiling or the floor.  These units are offered as wall-mount, ceiling-mount, or ceiling-floor mount units.
