Mcquay Geothermal Heat Pump 200x300 How expensive is geothermal heat pump installation? The fact of the matter is that any kind of geothermal heat pump is more energy efficient and therefore less expensive to operate each month than traditional heating and cooling systems. Regular heat pumps reduce energy usage by diverting heat from one location to another. This method works well, but it loses efficiency as temperature fluctuates in the environment. Geothermal heat pumps circumvent this problem by using the much more stable temperature found beneath the surface of the earth.

Given the energy efficiencies involved there is no technical reason you would not want to own a geothermal heat pump. The only barrier for entry is the price point. Installation costs for a geothermal heat pump may vary due to the location of the home or building and geology of the local area, but it is not unusual for the price to be two to five times the amount of a conventional heating and cooling system. Then, if the installation is not done correctly that can affect how well the heat pump works. Too few pipes or too little ground water can all adversely affect future savings.

Yet, despite the high initial installation cost for geothermal heat pumps, the benefits can be very well worth it. At worst a homeowner will usually save 20% on their monthly energy bill, but in areas with particularly high electric costs that can raise to 60% or even 75% in some cases. The only fossil fuel that can really compete with the low cost of a geothermal heat pump is natural gas and then only in countries with particularly low priced reserves. Even in the United States, where there are large natural gas deposits, geothermal heat pumps still out perform natural gas furnaces and the US Department of Energy estimates the average home owner will pay back the cost of geothermal heat pump installation in 5 to 10 years. That may sound like a long time, but when some unit will last for decades it really is not a very long time at all.
