dehumidifier 200x300 How Does a Dehumidifier Work? The purpose of dehumidifier is to remove moisture or humidity from the air.  For example, it is important to remove the moisture from a damp basement to prevent mold, insects or damage to  furnishings or structures.  A dehumidifier can help remove the excess moisture from the air in such a situation.  This process is fairly simple.

The dehumidifier is only made up a few components.  Most residential dehumidifiers consist of a compressor, evaporator, condenser, and circulating fan.  The fan pulls air into the dehumidifier and as the air passes through comes in contact with the cooled evaporator coils.  These coils extract moisture from the air.  The moisture remains on the coils and drips into the  reservoir.  Finally, the air flows over the warmer condenser coils where the water is removed from the air and returned to the room.

There are several types of dehumidifier with a variety of specifications.  It is important to first determine your need for a dehumidifier.  Do you need a small dehumidifier for damp room or for a recently flooded home?  Will you need the dehumidifier to run continuously?  Once you assess your situation then it will be easy to identify the right dehumidifier to fit your needs.
