open well 300x265 Components of a Geothermal Heat PumpAs the name indicates, a geothermal heat pump utilizes natural heat from the ground for its efficient functioning. During the summer, a geothermal heat pump will extract heat from your building and release it back to the ground to cool your home. But, in winter, it extracts heat from the ground to warm your building. Does it sound interesting? Well, the amazing functioning of a geothermal heat pump depends on a number of components which are as mentioned below.

Coaxial Heat Exchanger

This is perhaps the most significant of all the components of a geothermal heat pump. The copper or cupronickel (optional) tube-in-tube coaxial heat exchanger used in water source heat pumps are designed for maximum heat transfer at normal and low water flow rates with minimum pressure drop. The inside tube is deeply fluted to enhance heat transfer and minimize fouling. All coaxial coils are tested to 400 psig on the water side and 500 psig on the refrigerant side. Geothermal range units include coil and piping insulation to protect against condensation in low-temperature geothermal applications.

Loop System

The efficient functioning of a geothermal heat pump largely depends on the effectiveness of its loop system that involves a series of pipes that have been buried beneath the ground. Different types of loop systems include open loop system and closed loop system. An open loop system demands constant supply of water from a well or lake in order to circulate and release the liquid. But in the case of closed loop system, the liquid circulated will not be discharged from the system, but rather circulated throughout the piping in the ground.

Air Handler

As in the case of an air source heat pump, the air handler in a geothermal heat pump will also pump in cool or warm air through a network of ducts thus circulating the air to the entire home.

Apart from these, a geothermal heat pump consists of several other vital components such as compressor, condenser coils, evaporator, refrigerant unit, fan blower, and expansion valve – all of which together contribute for the efficient functioning of a geothermal heat pump.
