What is HSPF?

HSPF or Heating Seasonal Performance Factor is a term used to measure the efficiency of heat pumps for air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration.  HSPF is defined as the ratio of BTU heat output over the heating season to watt-hours of electricity used.  The higher the HSPF rating the more energy efficient the unit is.  A US Energy Tax Credit is offered on most systems with and HSPF of 8 or better.
