intertherm A Brief History of Intertherm Heating and CoolingThe International Oil Heating Company began operation in Missouri in 1919 and was originally founded to provide clean-burning fuel systems to the very polluted metropolitan area of St. Louis, Missouri. The company would continue to build cleaner burning fuel oil stoves and heaters for the domestic market until World War II. That was when IOH, later to become Intertherm, began building heaters for mobile homes used by the US Army in cold weather conditions. After the war, the company continued such manufacturing and even expanded their business.

Intertherm itself eventually came into being in its present state in 1987 as a brand of the Nordyne corporation which itself is a part of a parent company known as Nortek Holdings. As part of this relationship, Intertherm would become the brand for heating, ventilation and air conditioner units intended for sale in the manufactured/mobile home market. Since the mid-1980’s, Intertherm has been striving to perfect its products for this specific market and by many standards has achieved reasonably success.

Today, Intertherm produces a wide variety of heat pumps, water heaters, air conditioners, gas furnaces and fireplaces for manufactured homes and traditional residential housing. They are still a part of Nortek Holdings which reported gross revenues of $2.3 billion as late as 2007. Along with the rest of the Nordyne Group, Intertherm is headquartered in O’Fallon, Missouri. Given its success in the very competitive heating, ventilation and air conditioner market it seems likely that Intertherm will continue to make HVAC products for the foreseeable future.
